The umpires’ governing board voted Tuesday to boycott a conference call with management intended to discuss implementing replay, angry that their concerns aren’t being addressed. MLB responded by saying it canceled the Wednesday call because it doesn’t have a replay agreement with the union.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Angels: INF Maicer Izturis had season-ending surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb.
Orioles: Closer George Sherrill was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with left shoulder inflammation.
Rangers: 2B Ian Kinsler might be able to avoid season-ending surgery for a sports hernia after receiving an encouraging diagnosis from a specialist Tuesday.
Rays: B.J. Upton apologized Tuesday for a “mental lapse” on the bases, saying he didn’t want to become a distraction. “There’s no excuse for it. It can’t happen, especially in the middle of a pennant race,” the 23-year-old center fielder said a day after his gaffe. Upton looked shocked Monday night when he was thrown out at second base on what should have been an easy double against the Angels. … Manager Joe Maddon was ejected in the sixth for arguing with first-base umpire Jerry Meals after Upton beat out an infield single. Upton was called out when Meals ruled he turned toward second and was tagged by Howie Kendrick.
Red Sox: RHP Josh Beckett’s next start has been pushed back a few days while the team tries to determine the cause of lingering numbness in his right hand. … Signed former Astros OF Jason Lane to a Triple-A contract and assigned him to Pawtucket.
Royals: Agreed to terms with RHP Kip Wells. … 3B Alex Gordon was out of the lineup against the Indians because of a stiff back. … RHP Luke Hochevar left his start against the Indians with tightness in his right rib cage while warming up for the sixth inning.
Twins: The Twins were without LF Delmon Young (ankle) and SS Adam Everett (hand) on Tuesday against the A’s.
Yankees: The team is still deciding whether Carl Pavano will pitch for them this weekend. The oft-injured right-hander is in the mix to start Saturday at Baltimore. … Activated OF Hideki Matsui off the 15-day disabled list and optioned OF Justin Christian to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Braves: Placed reserve INF Ruben Gotay on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring and recalled LHP Jo-Jo Reyes from Triple-A Richmond.
Brewers: OF Ryan Braun did not play Tuesday night against the Astros because of tightness in his lower back.
Dodgers: The team officially announced that it has reacquired RHP Greg Maddux and cash considerations from the Padres, who will receive two minor-league players to be named or cash considerations.
Mets: RHP Billy Wagner has more pain and swelling in his pitching elbow, and the All-Star closer is out indefinitely. Wagner had an MRI exam Tuesday that revealed additional inflammation in his left elbow.
Nationals: Purchased the contract of RHP Marco Estrada from Triple-A Columbus.
Padres: Activated RHP Brett Tomko (elbow) from the 15-day disabled list.
Reds: RHP Matt Belisle is done for the season after having surgery on his right knee.
