Girls volleyball
Naperville Central (8-0) had a strong showing in its first tournament of the season at Prairie Ridge. The Redhawks won all five of their matches, including a 25-22, 28-26 victory against previously unbeaten St. Charles East (13-1). Emily McGee had 39 kills and 33 digs on the day for the winners, Meghan Bray added 46 kills and setter Kelsey Hoey tallied 96 assists.
In other action, Plainfield North went 4-0 and claimed the tournament title at Yorkville. Kylee Baker led the way with 38 kills and 43 digs. … Illiana Christian took top honors at Rich South behind Corinne Hoekstra, Nadine Krzyston and Lisa Trepton.
Cross-country
Lincoln-Way Central freshman Lukas Verzbicas beat 222 runners in the 33-team Class 3A race at the Peoria Woodruff Invitational with his winning time of 15 minutes 13 seconds. Danny Pawola of Neuqua Valley took second. Geneva won both big-school titles at Detweiller Park. The boys, led by sixth-place Andrew Nelson (15:47), edged defending state champion Neuqua 78-96. Geneva’s girls dominated, placing all five scoring runners in the top 11, including champion Kelly Whitley (18:38). Hinsdale Central placed second with 108 points to the Vikings’ 37.
Girls swimming
Downers Grove North senior Adrienne Bicek won the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.2) and the 500 freestyle (4:57.69) and swam a leg of the winning 400 free relay (3:38.22) to highlight the Neuqua Valley Invitational. Teammate Haley Sims also won the 100 butterfly (57.91). Waubonsie Valley won the meet with 308 points, followed by Neuqua (292.5) and St. Charles North (207.5).
