Check it out if you … Have been looking for an excuse to show off your shop skills since you aced the class, want to add the drive of competition to a lazy Sunday, don’t care how fast your car goes so long as it looks awesome.
The details: From 2 to 4 p.m. Sundays, The Galaxie hosts an open shop for anyone interested in working on model cars. You can buy a variety of kits at the music, movement and art venue, and the $25 price includes admission to the Fine Car Pine Car Derby on May 10 at California Clipper (1002 N. California Ave.), where participants will put their art and racing cars to the test for the chance to win cash and prizes. All the tools you need are available free of charge. Since the open shops started, groups of young adults have been coming to hang out and share tips while they carve, hammer, paint and sand their cars. If you have a specific design in mind, you’re welcome to bring extra materials to work with.
The payoff: Embracing your nerdy high school self and maybe earning some bragging rights.
