The fast start the Blackhawks insisted they had to have in Game 4 of their Stanley Cup Western Conference semifinal did not materialize Thursday night at the United Center.

No matter. They scored when it mattered as Martin Havlat beat the unbeatable-looking Roberto Luongo for a goal at the 17-minute-16-second mark of the third period to send the teams into overtime and Andrew Ladd put the game-winner past Luongo less than three minutes into the extra period for the 2-1 victory that ties the series at two games apiece. Dave Bolland and Ladd assisted on Havlat’s goal.

Darcy Hordichuk scored for Vancouver in the second period. The Hawks outshot the Canucks 24-14 through regulation.

Vancouver had struck first in each of the first three games, including twice in the first period of Game 3 on Tuesday night.
