Crosswalk stings start

The undercover police stings aimed at catching drivers who endanger pedestrians in crosswalks are back again — but this time at night. The first enforcement operation was conducted Monday night in Lakeview at Belmont Avenue and Orchard Street, officials said. The goal of the well-publicized stings, which started during daylight hours last year, is reducing crashes involving pedestrians that occur after dark, officials said.

Coroner finds no sign of trauma

A cause of death for Wilfredo Gines, 31, a relative of Chicago Ald. JoAnn Thompson (16th) is pending further investigation, according to the Lake County coroner’s office in Indiana. Gines, who was found dead Saturday night in the back of his Ford Expedition in Hammond, had appeared to suffer blunt head injuries, according to initial reports.But Monday, Coroner David Pastrick said in a written statement that Gines’ body showed no signs of “trauma whatsoever.”

Man, 81, robbed in West Loop

A woman is accused of knocking an 81-year-old man to the ground in the West Loop and taking his wallet. Michelle Gandy, 41, was charged with felony robbery after the Sunday incident, according to Chicago police. The man approached Gandy asking for directions to the CTA Blue Line at about 4:50 p.m. in the 500 block of South Clinton Street. Gandy told him she was going that way and began asking him for money, police said.

Man falls 19 floors to his death

A man who plummeted nearly 20 floors from a Lincoln Park high rise Monday night died from his injuries, police said. The victim, a man in his 30s, initially survived his fall from a 19th-floor condominium in the 2000 block of North Lincoln Park West at about 8:15 p.m., police and fire officials said. The victim landed in a tennis court below, police said, and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died. Police suspect the death was a suicide.
