This hasn’t exactly been a banner week in the news. On Sunday, Kanye West lost control on the MTV Video Music Awards (and subsequently apologized). And on Monday, beloved actor Patrick Swayze died of pancreatic cancer. Here is what RedEye’s readers have been saying about those developments and other news of the week on our blogs.
West goes south
Kanye West needs to understand that the world does NOT revolve around Kanye West (“Kanye’d,” Sept. 14 cover story). He needs to have a lifetime ban from all award shows. He is the most obnoxious person in the entertainment field. The biggest disrespect went to his late mother. It appears that she failed to teach him any manners or how to get along with others.

MTV wanted it to happen
Producers keep inviting [Kanye West] because they love this stuff. Controversy equals high ratings and buzz. As soon as Kanye got on a stage, no doubt tons of people texted and called their friends to tell them to put on TV. No doubt their Web site is getting slammed today with readers looking for the video and follow-up stuff. The initial thought may be, “Oh, God, what is he doing?” But in the end, they win.

Don’t worry about Kanye’s career
It’s definitely not over for Kanye. After all, it’s not like he did anything nearly as bad as Chris Brown did, and Chris is still making music. Plus, I think people expect Kanye to be an arrogant jerk.

We’ve got Olympic spirit
I don’t have a problem with [Chicago 2016] promoting the Olympics on the CTA (“Olympic messages irk some CTA riders,” Going Public column, Sept. 15). There are still some people who need convincing that this will be a good thing for the city. And for tourists riding the CTA, it gives them the information that they may not have known. Is it really a big deal to listen to the announcements? I don’t think so. When Chicago gets the Olympics, and our economy is boosted, all the naysayers will be rethinking their words.

Fond memories of Swayze
I’m old skl, people. My fave Patrick Swayze moment was when he vaulted that fence in a handstand on the way out to the rumble in “The Outsiders.” The only thing that came close was Legolas flippin’ onto that horse in “LOTR: Two Towers,” but Swayze’s acrobatics were superior. He was a supple, supple manhunk.
