1. Bulls must weigh if they want James … and Calipari
(May 17). The prospect of signing NBA MVP LeBron James is so tantalizing, the first thought is that you just do whatever it takes. But Bulls writer K.C. Johnson suggests the price, including taking on Kentucky’s John Calipari as head coach, could be too high. Besides, where would the league’s No. 1 player live, Highland Park?
2. The doctor, the centerfold wife and 1 million pills
(May 20). This is not a movie script, at least not yet, John Kass writes. A west suburban doctor has lost his license for a second time, in part because, according to the DEA, he ordered that many pills in a year for his practice to dole out. How that sits with his model wife is uncertain, but she didn’t seem to like the parts of his hearing in which a witness said her husband had traded pills for sex. You could call such alleged behavior unethical, or you could call it a reaction to the uncertainties of the cash-based economy.
3. Mark Prior injured again
(May 18). I suppose Cubs fans clicked on this one because they wanted confirmation that the team was right to let go of the former North Side pitching star. Either that, or the Web site this past week was visited by an unusually high number of orthopedic surgeons.
4. LeBron James house hunting in Highland Park?
(May 20). Oh, maybe he would live in Highland Park. It’s hard to imagine someone getting confused about having seen the 6-8, 250-pound James in the North Shore town, but a real estate agent swatted the rumor away like James himself dealing with an opponent’s weak layup attempt. Still, if you are thinking about coming here, LeBron, we’ll up our offer from last week to also include a solemn civic oath that nobody here will say a word if you put ketchup on your hot dogs. And no library fines.
5. ‘My Girl’ star Anna Chlumsky
all grown up
(May 19). “Brace yourselves,” says reporter Mark Caro. The Broadview-raised child star of the 1991 film will turn 30 this year. She’s graduated from the University of Chicago and tried her hand at being a food writer and working in publishing, but it took a street psychic, she says, to nudge her back into the acting game. Better that than a reality show.
