The scoop:
A 6-foot-4 right-hander whose fastball has been clocked at 96 mph, Foltynewicz was selected by the Houston Astros in the first round (19th pick) of the Major League Baseball draft June 7. The state’s first high school pitcher selected in the first round since the White Sox took Providence’s Kris Honel with the 16th pick in 2001, Foltynewicz has agreed to a $1.3 million signing bonus and will join the Astros organization rather that pitch for the University of Texas.
