Comcast customers in the western suburbs experienced a service outage today when Union Pacific Railroad damaged a fiber optic cable near railroad tracks at First and Poplar avenues in Elmhurst.
The service outage affected customers in the company’s western area, said Angela Amores, a Comcast spokesman.

“There was an outside party that affected a number of customers in our western area,” Amores said, adding that the problem occurred in Elmhurst.
Ninety percent of the affected customers had their service restored by 4:30 p.m. and all customers are scheduled to have their service restored by 6 p.m., she said.
Amores said the company does not provide the number of customers when it has a service outage for proprietary reasons. Union Pacific has been working on signals at the railroad crossing.
