As our children returned to school, I found myself balancing my frustration with the current state of education in Illinois with my optimism based on the solid plans to improve our educational system that have been presented by Daniel Biss, candidate for state representative in the 17th district.

Biss, a former University of Chicago mathematics professor, recognizes that in this global economy our country’s future rests on our children being well educated and prepared to compete with brilliant minds around the world. While Illinois is among the 15 wealthiest states, we rank 48th out of the 50 states in per-pupil educational expenditures. Biss has declared this as simply unacceptable.

Biss acknowledges our schools are in crisis and we cannot simply continue on with the status quo. As a teacher who has taught at every grade level, Biss knows our schools simply cannot go on with the state paying an inadequate share of education, and families and seniors worrying about our increasing property tax burden due to the state’s chronic shortfalls in school funding.

By electing Biss as our State Representative for the 17th district, we are sending Springfield an individual who understands the needs of children and the financial pressures that families in our community are experiencing as we strive to provide our children with the necessary foundation to have a bright future. Please join me in helping to elect Daniel Biss.
