It figures. Dan Persa, Northwestern’s best player and a classic overachiever, is progressing much faster than expected after Nov. 13 surgery to repair his ruptured right Achilles’ tendon.
That’s an operation that normally calls for a six-month recovery, but the quarterback is on pace to be cleared in March or April.
“He is way ahead of schedule,” Fitzgerald said. “Our medical staff is telling me he’s 3-4 weeks ahead already. We had anticipated him being cleared for spring practice and now that looks almost for sure.”
Persa, named first-team All- Big Ten by conference coaches, already has transitioned from a soft cast to a walking boot to a protective shoe.
“Dan’s a Heisman trophy candidate, that’s how I look at it,” Fitzgerald said.
