In regards to Sunday’s Perspective section, “10 things you might not know about TV ads,” number three caught my eye.

Beginning in December, a new law will require a TV ad to be aired at the same volume as the program it’s running in. The two-page bill took two years to pass. Two pages? Two years? How hard could it have been? Oh, wait. That’s right. They had to leave wiggle room. Two pages of blather probably leaves some serious loopholes.

How about instead: “The loudest sound level of a commercial shall not exceed the average sound level of the program it’s running in.” Simple, direct, unequivocal and only 20 words, not two pages.
