Jake Peavy’s first minor league rehab start is in the books as the White Sox right-hander worked 3 2/3 innings Friday night for the Birmingham Barons.
Peavy left after striking out Reid Fronk in the fourth inning having thrown 71 pitches. The goal for the night was 75 pitches, and Peavy had hoped to work through five innings. But after getting two outs on three pitches in the third inning, it turned into a 25-pitch frame and the Montgomery Biscuits scored two unearned runs after a single, double and a throwing error by third baseman Christian Colonel.
Peavy allowed five hits, struck out four and walked one while throwing one wild pitch. It was his first start since March 19 in spring training when rotator cuff tendinitis in his right shoulder slowed his comeback from surgery 10 months ago to repair the detached latissimus dorsi muscle near the same shoulder.
He opposed Biscuits starter Chris Archer, the former top prospect for the Cubs that was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in the Matt Garza deal. Archer left after four innings. The game is tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth.
Matt Zaleski, a 2000 graduate of Driscoll, relieved Peavy.
