Our club
of 12 women has been a source of friendship and support for more than 15 years. We’ve used the fictional journeys of our books’ characters to explore and examine our own lives.
We sometimes
have a dinner themed to match that month’s book selection: We had a Russian meal when we read “City of Thieves” by David Benioff (and) a Middle Eastern feast for “The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit: My Family’s Exodus From Old Cairo to the New World” by Lucette Lagnado.
We loved
Kate Atkinson’s “Case Histories” because it was a good piece of literature and a compelling detective story. The pleasure of reading this book was in trying to figure out how the characters and their stories were all going to connect in the end.
We’ve read
very few books we didn’t like as a group, but two of our least favorites were “Saving Fish From Drowning” by Amy Tan and “The Man Who Loved Children” by Christina Stead.

Colum McCann, author of “Let the Great World Spin,” to talk with him about this inventive and beautifully written novel.
We are planning
to read “Winter’s Tale” by Mark Helprin.
