We understand the problem: You want to learn a new activity but can’t invest the time. Summer is hectic, and you’ll miss too many sessions to justify the price of a class. Sure, you’re not likely to be graded on attendance, but what’s the point of paying if you can’t make it on a consistent basis?
An art school and community organization operated by a small staff and volunteers, Rumble Arts Center offers a diverse array of donation-based classes and workshops tailored for people with busy schedules. With an open-door policy and sliding-scale fees (suggested donation is $5 to $10 a class, but nobody is turned away), the Humboldt Park space allows patrons to drop in on classes anytime without the risk of commitment or cost. Families are encouraged to get involved together, and skill levels aren’t a concern.
Be it for exercise, cultural interest or simple curiosity, what more reason do you need to try African Drum and Dance, a class offered every Sunday afternoon that focuses on West African and Caribbean dance techniques stemming from Mali, Gambia and Guinea? Live percussion supplies the soundtrack to every class, and participants are invited to bring rhythmic devices — be they bells, drums, shakers or anything similar that makes a delightful noise. Best of all? No experience is necessary. Go ahead. Get your groove on.
