Mayor Rahm Emanuel has touted a number of initiatives during his first 100 days in office, but there’s a lot of heavy lifting and political wrangling ahead. Among the big items on Emanuel’s agenda in coming months:

* Propose and pass budget to address a daunting $635.7 million deficit

* Extend the school day and school year as part of reform efforts that have drawn criticism from the teachers union

* Prepare for NATO and G-8 summits here next May

* Expand recycling citywide

* Examine a proposed overhaul of garbage collection

* Name new head of Chicago Housing Authority

* Name new head of Chicago Park District

* Preside over the redrawing of aldermanic ward boundaries
