It is the moral duty of a civilized and humane society to do all possible to protect the sick, the disabled and the elderly who do not have the wherewithal to protect themselves. Radical conservatives at work in America today seem bent on eliminating so-called entitlement programs, which I take as meaning any and all programs designed to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Are these radical conservatives arrogant and insensitive or just na ve? If they were to have their way, we would see suffering, starvation, death and, yes, also crimes of desperation on a massive, unparalleled scale. The nationwide response to the dismantling and elimination of our humane support programs would make the recent riots in Great Britain look like a tea party.
