A quick review of articles on the Focus: Fighting the Debt page shows the nature and the scope of our financial problem. One article refers to the role of the supercommittee as “cutting the budget deficit” and later quotes Sen. Pat Toomey saying that the role of the supercommittee is to “accomplish the most significant deficit reduction that we can.” The deficit is the difference between what comes in and what goes out each year. If the deficit is reduced, that only means that the debt is growing at a slower rate. The goal needs to be to balance the budget, and then some. If the only way to pay the bills is to continue to borrow money, we’re in an unsustainable situation.
