QB (3): Jay Cutler, Caleb Hanie, Nathan Enderle*
Comment: Rookie fifth-round pick Enderle struggled in the finale exhibition, but Bears want to develop a young passer.
RB (3): Matt Forte, Marion Barber, Kahlil Bell
Comment: Team had kept four running backs in recent years, but Garrett Wolfe and Adrian Peterson were core special teams players.
FB (1): Will Ta’ufo’ou
Comment: Mike Martz’s offense doesn’t usually require a fullback and Bears didn’t keep a fullback last season, but shift has been made to running offense.
WR (6): Roy Williams, Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, Johnny Knox, Sam Hurd, Dane Sanzenbacher*
Comment: Sanzenbacher turned heads before the team even got to exhibition games. The challenge now is for Martz to find a way to utilize him.
TE (3): Kellen Davis, Matt Spaeth, Kyle Adams*
Comment: Adams began getting work as an H-back midway through camp and the Bears go younger by choosing him over veteran Desmond Clark.
OL (8): J’Marcus Webb, Chris Williams, Roberto Garza, Lance Louis, Gabe Carimi*, Frank Omiyale, Chris Spencer, Edwin Williams
Comment: For the first time since 2002, the Bears have a legitimate backup center on the roster in Spencer. Nice thing is Edwin Williams has versatility inside too.
DE (5): Julius Peppers, Israel Idonije, Corey Wootton, Nick Reed, Mario Addison*
Comment: One way to address concern over the third end is to keep three options. Bears love collecting pass rushers but might not keep five ends all season.
DT (5): Anthony Adams, Henry Melton, Matt Toeaina, Amobi Okoye, Stephen Paea*
Comment: The only surprise here would have been if Marcus Harrison stuck around. If Okoye can perform, group will be deep.
LB (5): Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, Nick Roach, Brian Iwuh, Dom DeCicco*
Comment: This is the first time under Lovie Smith the team has opened the season with less than six linebackers. Don’t be surprised if a veteran is added.
CB (6): Charles Tillman, Tim Jennings, Zack Bowman, D.J. Moore, Corey Graham, Joshua Moore
Comment: Many thought there would be an addition during the offseason, but decision was made to go with experienced group.
S (5): Chris Harris, Major Wright, Craig Steltz, Chris Conte, Winston Venable*
Comment: Injuries to Steltz and Conte in exhibition finale were not serious and Venable has emerged as a potential contributor on special teams.
SPEC (3): Pat Mannelly, Robbie Gould, Adam Podlesh
Comment: This group provides as much consistency as any position on the team.
