Chicago Public Schools officials this morning offered financial incentives to both schools and teachers across the district to move to a longer class day.
Three schools have already decided to move to a longer school day — Skinnner North, Genevieve Melody and STEM Magnet Academy, a new school. The schools voted for the change Friday and were provided incentives in return.
Today, CPS offered the same incentives to all other schools.
If they make the move in September, schools receive $150,000 and teachers a lump sum of $1,250 — which is about 2 percent of their salaries. If they move to a longer day in January, schools would receive $75,000 and teachers $800.
To make the move, a majority of voting teachers need to approve the schedule change. Teachers would start at 7:50 a.m. and students at 8 a.m. The school day would end at 3:30 p.m.
