Australia

A shark bit off the legs of a bodyboarder, who subsequently died onshore at a popular surf spot in western Australia Sept. 4. The bodyboarder and five friends were off the coast of Bunker Bay, at a spot known as the Farm, when the shark attacked. A beach employee said sharks had been spotted far out at sea months ago, but they were deemed no threat because sharks there typically don’t venture close to shore. It was the first attack in the area in about 20 years.

Italy

Tens of thousands of Italians took to the streets Tuesday to protest the government’s latest round of austerity measures. The strike resulted in cancellation of flights, trains and buses and the closure of government offices. Italy’s largest union called for the general strike and is demanding greater job protection and stronger action against tax evaders. German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently compared the economic situation in Italy to that of Greece, where strict austerity measures have led to broad civil unrest. Travelers should remain up to date on the Italian security situation and stay clear of demonstrations.

Jamaica

Jamaican police said a 57-year-old retiree from New York City was shot to death in her car outside a relative’s house in Clarendon parish Sept. 4. The Constabulary Communications Network reported that the woman originally was from the Bronx and lived in Kingston. No arrests had been made. Violence and shootings occur regularly in certain areas of Kingston.

Trinidad and Tobago

Last month the small island country announced a limited state of emergency, citing an increase in deadly gang violence sparked by 11 murders in 48 hours. Last week authorities announced that the state of emergency will be extended for three more months. Included are an 11 p.m.-to-4 a.m. curfew and greater authority for police officers to search suspects and seize property without a warrant. Travelers should be aware of the extended state of emergency through December as well as the security concerns.

Worldwide
