I was impressed to read E. J. Dionne’s article “How much has Obama learned on the job?” (Commentary, Sept. 12). He certainly has a far better understanding of political reality the Tea Party apologist Charles Krauthammer.

It should be obvious to even the most naive people that Republicans are pursuing the goal that Mitch McConnell stated when the President was first elected: the GOP’s “number one goal is to see Obama fail.” So the Republicans keep pushing more taxes cuts for the millionaires and billionaires while they try to voucherize Medicare and shrink Social Security. They refuse to close loopholes for corporations sending jobs overseas while they attempt to reduce the budget by forcing teachers, firemen and policemen onto the employment line. And, they ask “where are the jobs” as they encourage their business allies to wait until Obama is defeated before investing the trillions they are hoarding.

Maybe the militant GOP extremists want another bailout for the banks, or another tax holiday for repatriated taxes earned by multinational corporations, or lower capital gains and no inheritance taxes. Why not eliminate taxes altogether on all Republicans making over $200,000?

When will Obama learn that you cannot compromise with right-wing fanatics?
