Chicago book lovers have until Wednesday to visit the Borders State Street store.
That’s when the last Borders in the city will close, with suburban locations scheduled to close by Sunday, according to the liquidating company.
It’s the end for the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based retailer, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February and has been shuttering stores.
One local company, Hilco Trading, is assisting in the chain’s liquidation.
And last week, the Northbrook-based group announced it would donate more than 8,000 “academic quality books” to Chicago Public Schools. Math, science, poetry, history and law books, among others, were purchased from Borders across the U.S., according to the company.
“Hilco and (company chairman/CEO) Jeff Hecktman felt it was an opportunity … to support childhood education,” said Richard Kaye, executive vice president of Hilco.
A CPS spokeswoman acknowledged that the school system would receive the books.
Last week, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that donation, as well as a separate donation of more than 122,000 books provided by Rock for Reading, a Chicago-based nonprofit that promotes literacy.
