Yes, Don Larson has heard the scuttle. The chairman of the 2012 Ryder Cup knows of the rumors circulating that host course Medinah is in horrid shape and even might be unfit for the event.
“An awful lot of chatter,” he said.
A Golfweek story last week reported Medinah No. 3 as “currently in bad condition.”
Larson acknowledged as a result of the 2010 renovation and varying weather, the summer has been a challenge for Medinah.
“The turf’s not even 2 years old, but our guys are managing it pretty well,” he said.
As for its fitness for the 2012 Ryder Cup next Sept. 28-30, Larson said it “should be ready to go.”
Should be?
“Will be ready to go,” he said. “There’s no alternative.”
Dozens of event officials and media members will see the course Monday and Tuesday for a one-year out Ryder Cup walk-through that will feature events with U.S. team captain Davis Love III and European counterpart Jose Maria Olazabal.
Monday’s festivities include a “Captains Fireside Chat” scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Chicago Theatre.
