Gandhi Gone Wild:

This drink feels almost restrained after a season’s worth of gingerbread lattes — and that’s the way we like it. The baristas at Uncommon Ground in Edgewater spike house-made chai with cinnamon-infused whiskey, cardamom syrup and espresso to make a grown-up treat that’s not too sweet. Served in a deep, white bowl big enough for breakfast cereal, the drink ($9) is a khaki pool of froth decorated with a delicate swirl of steamed milk.

A cloud of cinnamon rises off it, bringing to mind memories of bear-shaped sugar shakers and toast. Pick up the bowl with both hands — it’s a drink that demands full attention — and you’ll be rewarded with a creamy dose of warmth. The dusky cinnamon and cardamom flavors are cut by a pleasant hint of whiskey. It’s the kind of drink that should be served with shortbread cookies by a fireplace — and maybe a cozy blanket too, in case Gandhi needs a nap.
