Marcel Neumann, 86, a physician specializing in internal medicine and geriatric care who served on the staff of Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago and in private practice in Rogers Park for nearly 50 years, died of natural causes Monday, Dec. 19, at his home in Lincolnwood, said his son Robert.

Born in Prague, Dr. Neumann studied at the city’s Charles University as an undergraduate. His family, which owned an upscale delicatessen, survived World War II and immigrated to Hungary, then to Israel in 1948.

Dr. Neumann received a medical degree in 1954 from Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School in Israel and came to the U.S. shortly afterward.

He began practicing medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago in 1956. By the early 1960s, Dr. Neumann had set up a private practice in Rogers Park and was a staff physician at Weiss Hospital. He remained active in both locations for almost five decades, retiring in 2005.

As part of his rigorous European education, Dr. Neumann was trained as a painter and pianist. He entertained at his home with a repertoire that ranged from Mozart to Gershwin, his family said.

“He was a talented musician and artist who trained with some of the best in central Europe in the day,” his son said. “He not only excelled in the medical profession, but mastered art and music and allowed others to enjoy his skills.”

Dr. Neumann is also survived by his wife of 54 years, Margita “Gitta” Bardosh Neumann; another son, Michael; and six grandchildren.

Services were held.
