We have been
together for more than 30 years. We’re a mixed group from Oak Park — married, singles and a few former Catholic priests.
For our 25th year
celebration we rented a villa in Tuscany. We still smile and enjoy talking about it.
Last year we
formed a four-person committee, and everyone submitted two book titles for possible selection for the following year. The committee meets a few times and selects from the titles submitted.
Authors we would
most like to meet: Margaret Atwood, Ann Tyler, Greg Mortenson and, if he were still alive, Mark Twain.
We usually spend
11/2 hours talking about the book.
Some favorite books:
“The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, “The Chosen” by Chaim Potok, “The White Hotel” by D.M. Thomas, “Middlesex” by Jeffrey Eugenides, “The Reader” by Bernhard Schlink.
Up next:
“The Wordy Shipmates” by Sarah Vowell and “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak.
