Street sweeping began Monday across Chicago, and the city’s Department of Streets and Sanitation is warning citizens to be aware of parking restrictions — temporary and permanent — that will be in effect.
The street-sweeping season lasts until Oct. 31, according to a release from the department, keeping dirt and debris out of the city’s sewer system and allowing for better drainage during rainy weather.
Temporary parking restrictions are posted the day before street sweepers are scheduled to work on a street, and some main streets have permanent signs that detail when parking is prohibited so the streets can be cleaned, according to the release.
The department also has the 2012 street-sweeping schedule on its website, and residents can call 311 for information.
Those who fail to move their cars can receive a $50 ticket.
Last year, the department said, it cleaned about 242,000 miles of city streets.
