A few days ago, President Barack Obama took the unprecedented step of going on TV to publicly lecture the justices of the Supreme Court on a blatant attempt to influence their decision regarding the Affordable Health Care Act. He argued that the justices should defer to the wisdom of a democratically elected (albeit hyper-partisan) Congress, rather than fulfill their constitutional responsibilities.
The president understands the concept of separation of powers in the United States Constitution. But I suspect that he doesn’t believe there should be any checks and balances on his power. Sorry, Mr. President, but you’re not in Chicago any more.
