Ohio State’s Thomas returning for junior year
Shortly after a losing Jared Sullinger early to the NBA draft, the Ohio State Buckeyes wondered if Deshaun Thomas was next to go. He’s not.
Thomas will return for his junior season, the school announced Friday.
Thomas, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound sophomore forward, starred early in the NCAA Tournament this year, scoring 31 points in the opening round. But, he struggled against Kansas in the Final Four, scoring just nine points on 3-of-14 shooting.
Thomas, a native of Fort Wayne, Ind., is Ohio State’s the top returning scorer and rebounder. He averaged 15.9 points and 5.4 rebounds last season.
Over 39 games last year, Thomas connected on 52 percent of his field goals (243-467) and connected on 75 percent of his foul shots (83-111). For his career, Thomas has scored 897 points (11.8 ppg.) over 76 appearances and 39 starts.
“We have a great team returning next season and I want to be a part of another championship run,” Thomas said in a statement. “My family, my coaches and I looked at my future as a professional but I love being a Buckeye and want to continue my education and development as a player and as a person at Ohio State.”
