BAMAKO, April 8 (Reuters) – Mali’s President Amadou Toumani
Toure has handed in his letter of resignation, Burkina Faso’s
foreign minister, a leading mediator for West Africa’s ECOWAS
bloc, said on Sunday.
The resignation paves the way for the soldiers who ousted
Toure in a March 22 coup to stand aside as pledged in a deal
last week that calls for the transfer of power to the president
of Mali’s National Assembly.
“We have just received the formal letter of resignation from
President Amadout Toumani Toure,” Djibril Bassole said. “We will
now contact the competent authorities so that the vacancy of the
presidency would be established and so that they take the
appropriate measures.”
