With just three goals scored in so far in four Major League Soccer games, the Chicago Fire is in need of the offensive spark that Chris Rolfe may provide.
A 29-year-old veteran who got his start here, Rolfe’s reacquisition was announced by the Fire on Monday. Terms were not disclosed.
A 2005 Fire pick in the MLS Super Draft, the former Dayton standout went on to score 40 goals through six seasons in 149 MLS and other games. He also collected 20 assists.
He’s expected to arrive in Chicago later Monday and join the Fire when they resume training on Wednesday.
“I’m thrilled to return to Chicago and play for the Chicago Fire,” Rolfe said in a statement. “The Fire has always been a special place for me. I look forward to getting in and putting in the work to help the team.”
Rolfe had spent the last 2 1/2 seasons playing for Danish team Aalborg BK. He appeared in 32 matches from 2010-12 and tallied six goals.
“Chris is a proven goal scorer with experience in MLS and abroad,” Fire coach Frank Klopas said in a statement. “Chris will help us as we push for the MLS Cup Playoffs and we are happy to welcome him back to the club.”
Rolfe, who was signed as a free agent, will be available to play in Saturday’s game at Toronto.
A native of Kettering, Ohio, he set a Dayton career record for assists (25) and is sixth all-time with 31 goals. He was inducted into the Ohio Soccer Hall of Fame in 2010.
Rolfe also made 10 appearances for the U.S. National team and helped the Fire to the 2005 U.S. Open Cup championship.
