Bob Bonifas is bored. And for the 74-year-old world traveler, that’s a fate worse than death.
For a week now, the founder of Alarm Detection Systems in Aurora has been stranded on a ship at South Georgia Island near Antarctica because of engine problems.
“We’ve been waiting here eight days now,” Bonifas told WGN-TV on Monday.
The ship is a former oceanographic research vessel that has been converted into a cruise ship that travels to remote areas of the Antarctic. It has been docked for a week in a port at South Georgia Island with 73 passengers aboard, including 16 Americans.
Bonifas — who is traveling with Janis Christiansen from Batavia — says they are not in any danger, and have plenty of food and water to last until a replacement ship arrives on Wednesday.
But that seems little comfort.
“We’re fine except we’ve been here eight days and eight more before we get back, 16 days doing nothing,” said Bonifas. “The attendants are trying to do everything they can to keep us entertained, but how many times can you walk among the penguins?”
