C Mathieu Perreault sat out Game 5 with what is believed to be a hand injury suffered when he was slashed by Patrice Bergeron in Game 4.
RW Mike Knuble scored his first goal of the series early in the second period when he deposited a Joel Ward rebound. Both players were healthy scratches for long stretches under Dale Hunter this season. “That’s what leaders do at this time of year,” Matt Hendricks said of Knuble. “Step up and do great things.”
LW Alex Ovechkin logged 5:18 of ice time in the third period of Game 5 after seeing less than two minutes of ice time in the third period of Game 4. Why? Because the Capitals were leading 2-1 after two periods in Game 4 and they were tied 2-2 after two periods in Game 5.
RW Alexander Semin has pumped in a team-high three goals but it was his block of a Zdeno Chara slapshot in Game 3 that has made him a legend in the locker room. “That kind of stuff goes a long way in this room,” Jay Beagle said.
