Giants’ Huff recalls panic attack
San Francisco Giants first baseman/outfielder Aubrey Huff detailed his recent panic attack that landed him on the disabled list.
Huff told the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday that he thought he was having a heart attack while he was in his New York hotel room on April 23 before the Giants’ doubleheader against the Mets.
He said he does not know how or why the episode occurred but he decided to leave his hotel room and head home to Tampa, Fla., because he could not breathe.
“I told myself, ‘I’ll be damned if I’m going to be sitting in this hotel room and die of a heart attack. I’ve got to get out of here,’ ” he said.
He recalled that the panic attack lasted about eight hours, including while he was on the flight to Tampa. He said his air vent was on full blast and he covered his head with his suit coat.
While with his family in Tampa, he had another panic attack when he woke up the next morning.
He said he initially let the team know he had a family emergency, but told his employers the truth after the second attack.
Huff received medical treatment and has seen a therapist.
He is due to come off the disabled list on Monday.
“Talking to him, he’s feeling great,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “He really believes he’s ready.”
Huff is hitting .182 this season.
