11: The number of different competition formats in the 28-year history of the Sprint All-Star Race, including 2012. What started in 1985 as a single-segment, 70-lap event with one pit stop required has evolved into the current format – four segments of 20 laps each, followed by a mandatory pit stop and a 10-lap shootout to the finish. The All-Star race has never included fewer than 70 laps or more than 135 laps in its various incarnations. This year’s race, scheduled for Saturday night, features a new wrinkle: the winners of the first four segments will be the first four drivers on pit road for the mandatory stop after Lap 80. From that point, pit strategy will determine the order cars leave pit road and line up for the final segment.
