I read “Contest may pick Prentice successor; NU pledges to build a gem if demolition OK’d” (News, Sept. 18) on Prentice Women’s Hospital. Personally, as a Chicago architect junkie, I would like to see the building converted. But with regard to the possible international design competition if Prentice is allowed to be demolished, I think Northwestern University has it backward. It should hold the competition now. Then it can compare the entries to the existing building, even perhaps getting some general cost comparison between the “winner” and the rehab of Prentice. If it can’t find a building that is more noteworthy, it should keep Prentice.
