Canadiens 2, Devils 1: Tomas Plekanec scored his team-leading 12th goal to snap a tie 6:49 into the third period as visiting Montreal matched a season high with its fifth consecutive victory.
Fourth-liner Colby Armstrong netted his first goal and Carey Price turned aside 32 shots for the Canadiens, who improved to 9-1-2 in their last 12 road contests.
Defenseman Peter Harrold scored his first goal since Dec. 2, 2010 when he was a member of the Los Angeles Kings. Johan Hedberg finished with 20 saves while making his career-best 12th straight start for the Devils, who saw their three-game home winning streak come to an end.
Defenseman Jarred Tinordi, who was making his NHL debut, denied New Jersey blue-liner Marek Zidlicky’s clearing attempt and fired a shot from just outside the left faceoff circle. Plekanec deftly deflected the puck with his stick to extend his point streak to four games.
Armstrong opened the scoring 8:08 into the first period after skating across the slot before firing a shot from the right faceoff circle. Harrold forged a 1-1 tie at 3:54 of the second with a wrist shot from the outside of the left circle which sailed between the pads of Price.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New Jersey honored longtime goaltending coach Jacques Caron prior to the game. Caron is in his 20th season with the Devils’ organization. … Tinordi made his NHL debut in front of friends and family. A first-round pick in the 2010 draft, the 21-year-old is the son of former NHLer Mark Tinordi. … With Devils C Andrei Loktionov nursing an undisclosed injury, LW Harri Pesonen made his NHL debut and logged 8 1/2 minutes of ice time.
