It’s fun, that’s why. I’m here for the fun.
The raucous, laugh-filled experience of the Tribune’s “Slap Shot” sparked it, and I’m still getting thanks for co-hosting that event. “Caddyshack” is the “Slap Shot” of golf movies. In fact, my boss, Mike Kellams, whose official title, I believe, is High Lord & Master/Sports, contends the lines in “Caddyshack” are quoted and traded more often than those from “Slap Shot.” Gunga galunga to that.
[ED.’s note: Mike Kellam’s title is Associate Managing Editor for Sports.]I also think the timing of our “Caddyshack” night matters the way it did with “Slap Shot.” The latter served as a love note to hockey fans starved by the NHL lockout. “Caddyshack” comes in advance of the U.S. Open: 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., Chicago.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the Tribune’s film critic Michael Phillips and me. Tickets are $15 and available here.
And as with the “Slap Shot” event, we hope to have a special guest associated with “Caddyshack” Skype in on the big screen for a conversation.
Hockey fans who had seen “Slap Shot” a couple thousand times, like me, were stunned at how great it was to see it on the big screen for the first in decades. I have no doubt that golfers will jump at the same chance to see the greatest golf movie ever.
