I beamed when I read that Cecile Kyenge, Italy’s new integration minister, proclaimed “I am not colored, I am black, and I say it with pride” (“Italy’s first black minister defiant in face of racist slurs,” News, May 3).
I suspect that many in the U.S. embrace the terms “African-American” and “person of color” because they are uncomfortable being called “black.” Brothers and sisters in America can thank Kyenge for taking the initiative. Grazia, Madam Minister.
