MLB Team Report – Miami Marlins – INSIDE PITCH
The Marlins are gradually loosening the reins on rookie pitcher Jose Fernandez. The 20-year-old threw a career-high 99 pitches Thursday night when he allowed two runs in seven innings against Cincinnati.
He walked three batters, one intentionally.
It was his eighth start of the season, his first at a level above Class A.
“He cruised through that game and if you take the intentional walk pitches out of there he’s right around 95 pitches. I think it was good for him to go out there and get through that seventh after giving up a run,” Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
The Marlins, 9-2 losers to Arizona on Friday, still plan to limit Fernandez’s innings this year to a range between 150 and 170. He finished the 2012 season in the Class A Florida State League.
Fernandez went seven innings one other time this year, May 4. He threw 82 pitches in that game.
He threw a previous-high of 86 pitches in his start on May 10.
“I felt great, I felt normal,” Fernandez said after his start Thursday. “I’m glad I stayed in the game. I like to compete. I know it’s not going to happen every time and I respect that. Whatever they want me to do, I’ll do it. I just want to keep putting a good effort and give the team a chance to win.”

PLAYER NOTES:
–RHP Tom Koehler, who will start against the Diamondbacks on Saturday, will be opening for just the second time this season. In six relief appearances, he had a 3.18 ERA and limited opposing hitters to a .135 batting average. In his previous start, May 12 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he allowed two runs in five innings. He gave up seven hits, including a homer.
–RHP Kevin Slowey (1-4) took the loss Friday against Arizona in his shortest and worst start of the season. He lasted just three innings, allowing seven hits — including three home runs — and six runs. His ERA ballooned from 2.55 to 3.44.
–RHP Ryan Webb allowed a seventh-inning single to Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, snapping a streak. Webb had gone a combined total of 10 1/3 innings without allowing a hit. The franchise record is 14 1/3, set by Armando Benitez in 2004.
–RHP Steve Cishek, the closer, is struggling. He is 1-4 with a 5.40 ERA. He went a combined 7-3 his first two years in the big leagues with a 2.66 ERA.
–LHP Wade LeBlanc, a starter earlier this season, turned in a solid relief effort Friday against Arizona. He allowed just one run in four innings, walking none and striking out two. He allowed five hits.
–RHP Jon Rauch was designated for assignment. Rauch, who allowed two runs in Miami’s 9-2 loss to Arizona on Friday, has a 7.56 ERA in 15 appearances.
–LHP Duane Below was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans. He is 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in four starts.

MEDICAL WATCH:
–RF Giancarlo Stanton (strained right hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list April 30. He did some light stretching and throwing on the field before the May 15 game. He’s still likely out until June as he is yet to begin running.
–1B/LF Logan Morrison (surgery to repair a torn right patella tendon in September 2012) on May 14 played first base for the first time this year in an extended spring game. He could begin a 20-day rehab stint the week of May 20. He’s expected to play nine innings in his next extended spring training game. He went on the 60-day disabled list March 31. As of April 7, Morrison was already participating in batting practice and taking grounders. He began running April 12 after being previously restricted to anti-gravity treadmill running.
–INF Chris Valaika (broken left wrist) is expected to miss four-to-six weeks after fracturing his wrist May 6. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 8. He had surgery where two pins were inserted into his broken left wrist on May 10.
–2B Donovan Solano (strained left intercostal muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 4.
–1B Joe Mahoney (strained right hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 28.
–RHP Henderson Alvarez (right shoulder inflammation) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on May 7. He threw bullpen sessions April 12 and 17 and threw 30 pitches in a batting-practice session April 23 in Jupiter, Fla. He threw 45 pitches on April 28 and was shut down after feeling soreness. He resumed playing catch in early May.
–1B Casey Kotchman (left hamstring strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 4. He was transferred to the 60-day DL on May 8.
–RHP Nathan Eovaldi (right shoulder inflammation) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 24, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 18.
–RHP Jose Ceda (Tommy John surgery in April 2012) went on the 60-day disabled list March 31 after suffering a setback in spring training.
