MLB Team Report – Miami Marlins – INSIDE PITCH

Slugger Giancarlo Stanton took another step in his recovery from a hamstring injury Wednesday when he took live batting practice at Marlins Stadium.

“He looked good, like he was feeling alright,” Marlins manager Mike Redmond told the Miami Herald. “I didn’t ask him afterward; I’m just going off the results. He was hitting them out. It’s another encouraging sign that he’s a little closer to being back on the field.”

Since his injury April 29, Stanton had been limited to hitting in the batting cage.

Redmond said that Stanton will also begin “light jogging and baseball activities within the next few days,” although there remains no timetable on when the slugging outfielder will begin a minor-league

rehabilitation assignment.

“We want to make sure that he’s 100 percent and we have him for the rest of the year,” Redmond said. “We don’t want to rush him.”

Although they don’t want to rush him, the Marlins sure could have used his bat Wednesday, when they were shut out, 3-0, by Cliff Lee and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Stanton is one of 11 Marlins players on the disabled list, the latest being outfielder Matt Diaz.

Diaz was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, retroactive to Sunday, with a bone bruise on his left knee.

Diaz said he hurt the knee May 7 in San Diego when he lost his footing while running on wet turf.

“I put on the brakes and my legs slipped out from under me. It grabbed and it got real tight that game,” said Diaz, who is just 3-for-18 (.167) in 10 games this season.

Diaz said the pain went away after a few days, but the knee still didn’t feel right and he couldn’t run with maximum speed.

The Marlins called up first baseman Jordan Brown from Triple-A New Orleans.

Brown, a left-handed hitter, was Redmond’s teammate with the Cleveland Indians in 2010.

Brown hit .230 in 26 games for the Indians that year in his only major league stint. He was batting .261 for New Orleans this year.

First basemen Logan Morrison and Joe Mahoney were scheduled to start rehabilitation assignments this week with Class A Jupiter. When they return next month, the Marlins will be able to use Greg Dobbs as a pinch hitter.

MLB Team Report – Miami Marlins – NOTES, QUOTES

RECORD: 13-34

STREAK: Lost two

PAST 10 GAMES: 2-8

NEXT: Marlins (Tom Koehler, 0-2, 2.82) at White Sox (TBD)

PLAYER NOTES:

–1B Logan Morrison, who is nearing a return from the 60-day disabled list for his knee injury, will play four more rehab games with Single-A Jupiter — three at first and one as a DH — according to manager Mike Redmond. After those outings, he’s scheduled to get bumped up to Double-A Jacksonville on Monday. The Marlins are hopeful he could rejoin the major league club by the end of next week.

–RHP Tom Koehler will make the first interleague start of his career as the Marlins travel to the south side of Chicago to start a three-game set against the White Sox. In Koehler’s last start he gave up a leadoff home run to Arizona’s Gerardo Parra and took a 1-0 loss against the Diamondbacks after going six innings and striking out a career-high seven batters.

–RHP Kevin Slowey left Wednesday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies prior to the sixth inning with a left lat strain and is listed as day-to-day. He gave up one run — on a solo homer to Delmon Young — in his five innings of work. He’s allowed one run or less in five of his six starts against NL East opponents and has a season ERA of 3.30, but with no run support from the Marlins bats, he possesses a 1-5 record.

–RF Marcell Ozuna extended his career-long hitting streak to eight games after going 1-for-4 Wednesday night against the Philadelphia Phillies and being one of just three Marlins to register a hit off LHP Cliff Lee. The rookie leads the team with a .304 batting average.

–2B Derek Dietrich singled in the ninth inning of Philadelphia Phillies’ LHP Cliff Lee’s complete-game shutout against the Marlins to extend his streak of reaching base safely in every career game to 12.

–RF Giancarlo Stanton took batting practice for the first time since going on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. There is still no timetable as to when Stanton could begin a rehab assignment

QUOTE TO NOTE: “He thought that maybe he was going to work through it but got out there and felt it. We just wanted to make sure to get him out of there. He seems to think he’ll be all right. We’ll re-evaluate him the next couple of days and see where he is.” — Manager Mike Redmond on RHP Kevin Slowey, who left his start early Wednesday.
