MLB Team Report – Miami Marlins – INSIDE PITCH
Marlins pitcher Alex Sanabia was moved to the disabled list because of a sore right groin that limited him to four innings in Miami’s 5-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
“No bueno. I’m going on the DL for a little bit. I guess,” he said. “It’s not getting better going out there. I’m going to get a few days to recover and get stronger.”
Sanabia, who allowed four runs on six hits, said he felt discomfort in the second inning. He said he stuck it out for four innings to give the bullpen a break.
Sanabia’s next start would have been Friday at Marlins Park against the New York Mets.
It’s unclear who will replace him in the rotation. Lefty Wade LeBlanc, who relieved Sanabia and tossed three scoreless innings, is an option.
The Marlins called up left-hander Dan Jennings from Class AAA New Orleans. He will pitch out of the bullpen, allowing the Marlins to use LeBlanc in the rotation.
Sanabia said he was out last year for a week or so with a groin issue. This time, he said, “I’m going to need a little bit of time to let it heal and get it stronger.”
“As of right now, there’s no point in continuing to pitch because it’s only getting weaker. I don’t want to make it worse and have it be something serious instead of something minor.”

–RF Marcell Ozuna went 1-for-3, extending his career-long hitting streak to 12 games, the longest by a Marlin this season and tied for the longest active streak in the majors with Orioles RF Nick Markakis. His 28 hits since May 1 lead all rookies.
–Rookie RHP Jose Fernandez, a former Tampa Alonso High star, admitted he was too “pumped up” in his homecoming to Tropicana Field, pitching in front of a few dozen family and friends. And it showed, as manager Mike Redmond said Fernandez was “overthrowing,” finishing up allowing a career-high seven runs in a career-low 3 1/3 innings Monday.
–2B Derek Dietrich, a 2010 second-round pick by Tampa Bay, admitted it was a little weird to have his first game at Tropicana Field on the visitor’s side. But Dietrich said the unexpected but welcomed trade to the Marlins in the offseason was for the best, as he’s taken advantage of an earlier-than-expected call-up, reaching base safely in 15 of his first 16 big-league games. “The trade was a blessing for me,” Dietrich said. “I enjoyed my time in the Rays organization, I definitely got better as a player and as a person, and I’m happy now that I’ve got to do the same for the Marlins.”
–1B Logan Morrison, rehabbing from right knee surgery, will take the next step in his rehab in moving up to Double-A Jacksonville Tuesday. Morrison, who spent a week with Class A Jupiter, will likely need the full 20 days allotted on his rehab assignment before returning, manager Mike Redmond said. “We want to get him as many at-bats as we can,” Redmond said.

MEDICAL WATCH:
–RHP Alex Sanabia (aggravated groin muscle) left the May 26 game. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 27.
–1B/LF Logan Morrison (surgery to repair a torn right patella tendon in September 2012) went on the 60-day disabled list March 31. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Jupiter on May 20. He will take the next step in his rehab in moving up to Double-A Jacksonville May 28. Morrison will likely need the full 20 days allotted on his rehab assignment before returning, manager Mike Redmond said.
–RHP Kevin Slowey (lat strain) left a May 22 start against the Phillies prior to the sixth inning. He is listed as day-to-day. He said he will make his next scheduled start May 28.
–2B Donovan Solano (strained left intercostal muscle) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 4. Solano could start baseball activities at extended spring training beginning May 27. Barring a setback, he could start playing in games a week later.
–RHP Nathan Eovaldi (right shoulder inflammation) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 24, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 18. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Jupiter on May 25.
–1B Casey Kotchman (left hamstring strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 4. He was transferred to the 60-day DL on May 8. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Jupiter on May 23.
–LF Matt Diaz (left knee bone contusion) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 19.
–RF Giancarlo Stanton (strained right hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list April 30. He did some light stretching and throwing on the field before the May 15 game, and he took approximately 50 swings in batting practice on May 22. He’s still likely out until June as he has yet to begin running.
–INF Chris Valaika (broken left wrist) is expected to miss four-to-six weeks after fracturing his wrist May 6. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 8. He had surgery where two pins were inserted into his broken left wrist on May 10.
–1B Joe Mahoney (strained right hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 28. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Jupiter on May 21.
–RHP Henderson Alvarez (right shoulder inflammation) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on May 7. He threw 20 pitches off a mound on May 21. He threw bullpen sessions April 12 and 17 and threw 30 pitches in a batting-practice session April 23 in Jupiter, Fla. He threw 45 pitches on April 28 and was shut down after feeling soreness.
