MLB Team Report – Miami Marlins – INSIDE PITCH
No team in baseball has struggled more for runs this year than the Marlins. Now, Miami could be without its biggest offensive player longer than anticipated.
Giancarlo Stanton, who missed all of May with a right hamstring strain, reported feeling some soreness in his knees after doing some light running.
Stanton had hoped to return in June, but that’s uncertain now.
He had been taking light batting practice but the team has decided to back off on his rehab regimen until he feels better.
“He just started lightly jogging and is just now complaining about his knees being sore,” manager Mike Redmond said May 30. “That’s where we’re at with that.
“He’s just playing catch. He’s still hitting, but he’s not able to run.”
Stanton went on the disabled list after straining his right hamstring trying to beat out a grounder against the New York Mets on April 29.
He missed a month last season after undergoing right knee surgery.
The bottom line: Stanton’s return to the Marlins’ punchless lineup seems more likely later rather than sooner.
“Disappointing?” Redmond said. “That’s an understatement.”

MLB Team Report – Miami Marlins – NOTES, QUOTES
RECORD: 13-41
STREAK: Lost nine
PAST 10 GAMES: 1-9
NEXT: Mets (Shaun Marcum 0-5, 5.77) at Marlins (Jacob Turner 0-0, 0.00)
PLAYER NOTES:
–RHP Jacob Turner, who went 0-3 with a 9.69 ERA in four starts and 13 innings of work in a miserable spring, was called up from Triple-A New Orleans to start against the New York Mets on Friday. The 2009 first round pick acquired from the Tigers last season struggled initially when he began the season in New Orleans, giving up 11 combined earned runs in his first three starts. But since then, he’s gone at least six innings and given up three earned runs or less in his last seven starts for the Zephyrs. He’s now 3-4 with a 4.47 ERA, 35 strikeouts and 14 walks in Triple-A.
–RF Giancarlo Stanton, out since April 30th with a grade two hamstring strain, complained to the Marlins training staff about soreness in his knees and is going to back off his rehab a little bit according to manager Mike Redmond. But Stanton was still seen running in the Marlins outfield and working with trainers before Thursday’s game. Stanton has said he no longer feels pain in his hamstring, but is obviously being cautious.
–LF Chris Coghlan will continue to hit in the leadoff spot even though manager Mike Redmond would prefer to bat him further down in the lineup where he could drive in runs. Since moving into the starting lineup 11 games ago, Coghlan has been getting on base more often than anyone on the team. He’s hitting .351 with three doubles, three triples, a home run and four RBIs over the stretch. “He’s not a prototypical leadoff hitter, but then again we don’t have a prototypical three or four hole hitter either,” Redmond said. “So it’s just one of those spots where I feel like he’s giving us good at-bats. Right now, he’s the guy getting on base so we’re hitting him in the top of the order.”
–RF Marcell Ozuna extended his major-league leading hitting streak to 15 games with a first-inning single to center. His streak is tied for the second-longest by a rookie in Marlins history (Chuck Carr, 1993). Edgar Renteria owns the club rookie record at 22 games, set in 1996.
–LHP Mike Dunn had his streak of 10 1/3 scoreless innings at home snapped when he gave up a two-run double to Ben Zobrist in the ninth Thursday. Dunn allowed two hits and one walk in one third of an inning. He was one of just six relievers in the game who had not allowed an earned run at home all year.
–RHP Ricky Nolasco finished 1-4 in May, but only gave up 16 earned runs over 40 1/3 innings for a 3.57 ERA (10 of those earned runs came in two games against the Phillies and Reds). The problem for Nolasco was the Marlins scored only six combined runs in his six May starts. He came into Thursday’s game with the second-worst run support in the National League at 2.27 runs a game. The only pitcher who has received less support is the Brewers’ Kyle Lohse (2.11). “I thought Ricky was great,” manager Mike Redmond said. “He’s given us a chance every single time he’s gone out there. He gave up a couple of runs, but when we’re not scoring runs, he’s got to go out there and be perfect. And no pitcher can be perfect.”
–RHP Nathan Eovaldi allowed two runs in four innings May 30 in his second rehab start for Class A Jupiter. Eovaldi is expected to make a rehab start for Double-A Jacksonville next week. That would be his third rehab start, and he could be activated from the disabled list after that.
QUOTE TO NOTE: “It’s really coming down to the fact where guys have to get tired of getting beat.” — Manager Mike Redmond after another loss Thursday.
