MLB Team Report – San Diego Padres – INSIDE PITCH
After going heavy for pitching in recent drafts, the Padres broke with form Thursday and took position players with their three picks.
–With the 13th overall pick, the Padres took Mississippi State corner outfielder Hunter Renfroe.
–With the 50th overall pick, the Padres selected shortstop Dustin Peterson, a senior at Gilbert (Ariz.) High.
–With the 69th overall pick, the Padres took outfielder Jordan Paroubeck from Serra High in San Mateo, Calif.
“We really did take the best players we thought had the biggest chance to impact the organization,” said assistant general manager Chad MacDonald, who was running his second draft for the Padres. “If it had been three arms, we would’ve gotten that.”
The Padres apparently were focused on taking New Mexico corner infielder D.J. Peterson — Dustin’s older brother — with the 13th pick. But the senior Peterson went to Seattle a pick earlier.
“I’m sure the Mariners are happy,” MacDonald said. “But we’re very excited to have a foundation of Renfroe, Peterson and Paroubeck. They are three bats we liked. They’re all pretty dynamic athletes, too. They impact both sides of the ball.”
The Padres are short on position players in their system. And their top offensive prospect, right fielder Rymer Liriano, isn’t playing this season after having elbow reconstruction surgery during spring training.
Renfroe hit .352 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs this season as a junior at Mississippi State after two disappointing seasons as a freshman and a sophomore. Renfroe is 6 feet 2 and 216 pounds and grades out with three plus tools — power, running speed and throwing arm. He also caught and pitched in his first two collegiate seasons.
Dustin Peterson is a shortstop who could move to second or third base. He is 6-2 and 180 pounds with a college commitment to Arizona State.
Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said Peterson has “expressed interest in playing pro baseball … and now that we’ve selected him, we feel like he wants to go out and start his pro career.”
Paroubeck is a 6-2, 190-pound switch-hitter. “He’s a little bit on the raw side,” said Padres scouting director Billy Gasparino.
The Padres have $6,808,900 to spend on their first 11 draft picks. The slot value for Renfroe at No. 13 is $2.678 million.

PLAYER NOTES:
–CF Cameron Maybin was activated and 1B/3B Yonder Alonso (right hand contusion) was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 1. Maybin, who had been on the disabled list since April 17 with a right wrist impingement and had missed 45 games, returned after nine games on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Tucson. He went 2-for-5 with two RBI, one run scored, one walk and two stolen bases and should have been awarded a triple but for a debatable scoring call. CF Eric Young Jr. ran hard for Maybin’s deep drive in the 11th and had the ball glance off his glove but was charged with an error.
–1B/3B Yonder Alonso (right hand contusion) was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 1.
–RHP Andrew Cashner threw a season-high 107 pitches in seven innings and gave up seven hits and three runs. It was his sixth straight start of at least six innings. Since joining the rotation on April 20, he’s 4-3 with a 3.64 ERA.
–SS Everth Cabrera, who went 2-for-6 with a double, has hit in seven straight games, and six have been multi-hit games. This was his fourth straight multi-hit game, his sixth in the past seven, seventh in the past nine and 13th in the past 22.
–OF Hunter Renfroe from Mississippi State was the Padres’ first-round pick and the 13th player taken overall. He’s hitting .352 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI, with a .440 on-base percentage and a .634 slugging percentage for the Bulldogs, who will play in a Super Regional tournament starting Saturday at Charlottesville, Va.

MEDICAL WATCH:
–1B Yonder Alonso (right hand contusion) was hurt May 31, didn’t play June 1-5 and went on the 15-day disabled list June 6.
–RHP Huston Street (strained left calf) went on the 15-day disabled list June 1.
–OF Cameron Maybin (right wrist impingement) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 16. In addition to a bone bruise in the wrist, Maybin has inflammation in the cartilage as well as possible ligament damage. He started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson on May 24. He was activated June 6.
–INF Logan Forsythe (plantar fasciitis in right foot) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 24. He started jogging May 8, and he was hitting in the cage as of mid-May. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson on May 29. The timetable for his return to the Padres is unknown.
–RHP Joe Wieland (Tommy John surgery in July 2012) went on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 22. He threw 100 pitches at 75-80 percent on April 26. He threw live batting practice for the first time June 2. He’s unlikely to return before August.
–LHP Cory Luebke (Tommy John surgery in May 2012) went on the 60-day disabled list March 20. After taking three weeks off due to soreness in his elbow, he resumed throwing around Opening Day. He threw from 150 feet in late April, but he backed off his throwing program again in early May after feeling soreness in the elbow. He’s not expected to resume throwing until early June, pushing back his possible return until after the All-Star break.
–RHP Casey Kelly (torn right ulnar collateral ligament) went on the 60-day disabled list March 30. He had season-ending Tommy John surgery April 2.
