
The latest arrival at Brookfield Zoo is a baby giraffe, 5-foot 9-inches tall and weighing 173 pounds.
Jasiri, a 71/2-year-old giraffe, gave birth to a baby boy on June 21. The zoo released photos of mother and son today. It was Jasiri’s first birth and the 59th time a giraffe has been born at the west suburban zoo.
The father is Hasani, 4, who arrived at Brookfield Zoo in 2010 on a breeding loan from Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kansas. He is also the father of Dave, a nearly 8-month-old calf born in November 2012.
The zoo also noted that two sloth bear cubs were born at the zoo on Jan. 20, a klipspringer was born on June 14, two addax antelopes were born on June 7 and 22 and two more are expected, an Angolan colobus monkey was born on March 9, and three dolphins are expecting.
