DuPage Birding Club to meet July 11
The public is invited to join members of the DuPage Birding Club for a free presentation by Walter Marcisz on Thursday, July 11, at 7:30 p.m. The location is Faith Lutheran Church, lower level, 41 N. Park Blvd., in Glen Ellyn.
Marcisz will offer an introduction to shorebirding and share tips on how to identify such birds as sandpipers and plovers. He also will share information on the best places to watch shorebirds in northeastern Illinois.
Marcisz has been a Chicago-area birder for over 45 years. He is a past president of the Chicago Ornithological Society and currently leads field trips and teaches bird identification classes and workshops. In addition, Marcisz is the author of numerous papers and articles about birds, and conducts biological surveys for various environmental consultants. He takes an active interest in bird conservation, with a particular focus on birds in the Lake Calumet region of southeast Chicago.
Glen Ellyn keepsakes of yesteryear
The Glen Ellyn Historical Society will have a booth at the Glen Ellyn Farmers Market, which opens at 8 a.m. and runs until noon on Friday, July 12. The Historical Society will sell Glen Ellyn collectibles, high school spirit wear, books about Glen Ellyn history and tasty goodies from pioneer times. The booth will also be at the farmers market Aug. 2 and Aug. 16. Look for the pioneer lady and the bright blue tent. Edible book contest
The Clarendon Hills Public Library is seeking clever cooks and hungry readers to participate in the second annual Edible Book Contest–a celebration of literature, art and food. This year’s event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 13.
An edible book is any representation of a book title that is made primarily from edible materials. It can be as fancy as an elaborately decorated cake or as simple as a hot dog in a beer mug (Frankenstein?). This is a chance to have fun and be creative.
Awards will be made in the following categories: Children entering fifth grade or younger, young adults entering sixth through 12th grades, college age and up, and families.
Register online at clarendonhillslibrary.org. Entries should be dropped off at the library 11 a.m. and noon on Saturday, July 13. Awards will be given out at 2 p.m., and then the feasting will begin. Midwestern University Clinical Campus dedication

Bat Bonanza
Learn about Illinois bats as you hike with a “bat detector” and listen for the sounds these mammals make to communicate and navigate. The program is from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 19, at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center, 3609 Spring Road in Oak Brook. The program is for ages 6 and older. Cosley Zoo Uncorked
On Thursday, July 18, Cosley Zoo presents the fifth annual Cosley Uncorked wine tasting event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Cosley Zoo is located at 1356 N. Gary Ave., in Wheaton. The cost of the event is $35 per person or $50 per couple. The event is open to adults 21 years of age and older.
Guests will be invited to take a stroll through the zoo after hours and enjoy an evening of wine, food, music and fun. The evening will also include a Tipsy Turtle raffle. There will be more than 40 different wines available to sample from Famous Liquors knowledgeable wine distributors.
