ST. LOUIS – The Chicago Cubs will play short-handed Friday night but are expected to regain the services of backup catcher Dioner Navarro soon.

Navarro, who was involved Wednesday in a violent collision with Philadelphia’s Chase Utley, will not need to go on the 15-day disabled list after being diagnosed with a mild grade 1 right ankle sprain.

Navarro was examined Friday in Chicago by team orthopedist Stephen Gryzlo.
