ArcLight Cinemas will host its third annual Documentary Film Festival from Oct. 9 to 13 at the theater’s Hollywood location.
This year’s fest received more than 250 submissions — its highest to date — including movies screened at Sundance, Tribeca and Toronto. In fact, Tribeca Film Festival winner “Let the Fire Burn” will open the L.A. festival. The Jason Osder-helmed film chronicles the 1985 clash between Philadelphia police and the African-American radical group MOVE.
Other films include Sundance and Toronto Film Festival award winner “The Square” about the conflict in Egypt from the heart of Tahrir Square; “The Other Shore,” which follows Diana Nyad’s record-breaking swim from Cuba to Florida; and Mahdi Fleifel’s “A World Not Ours” about Palestinian refugees living in a Lebanese refugee camp.
“ArcLight Cinemas is about the celebration of film and we are ecstatic that the festival continues to grow and thrive in a city that has long been the epicenter for incredible storytelling,” Gretchen McCourt, exec VP of cinema programming, said in a statement.
The top docs will be recognized at a reception at ArcLight Hollywood on Oct. 13. Moviegoers will pick an Audience Favorite and a $10,000 prize will go to a jury-selected film. “Open Heart,” which screened at last year’s fest, received an 2012 Oscar nomination for documentary short.
