Martin Durkin was the first person to kill a federal agent. On Oct. 11, 1925, he shot FBI Agent Edwin Shanahan at Porter’s Garage at 6231 Princeton Avenue in Chicago. Shanahan was attempting to arrest Durkin for violation of the Dyer Act, the transportation of a stolen automobile, a charge Durkin denied. Durkin was eventually caught, subsequently convicted, and sentenced to 19 years in an Illinois prison for the murder of Shanahan, followed by 15 more years in Leavenworth for his federal crime.
